Imperial War Museum London commissioned a thought-provoking temporary exhibition exploring the psychological impact of conflict, designed by PLAID Design to occupy a series of interconnecting unique spaces within the museum. Scena returned to collaborate with IWM, tasked with creating cohesive setworks that maintained continuity throughout the gallery while ensuring each area challenged visitor perceptions. The design required numerous tall studwork structures and painted plinth table bases constructed in sequence to integrate AV projections and display items under acrylic hoods.
Appointed as principal contractor, Scena provided full package management including H&S CDM, master programme oversight, and a complete set of construction drawings in advance of production. Design development was critical given the variety of materials specified. The team deployed dedicated additional drafting resources to manage the compressed programme, ensuring all setwork elements achieved the aesthetic required by the design team while maintaining the project schedule.
Graphics formed a crucial component of the exhibition, with Scena coordinating closely with appointed subcontractors to ensure imagery was visually arresting and purposeful. The space was enhanced with informative colour-rich images and text, newly painted elevations throughout, and a carefully sequenced installation that knitted together each area to tell a cohesive story through engaging design elements. Full cooperation with both the IWM team and PLAID ensured the exhibition maintained thematic flow as visitors meandered through the interconnected spaces.
