Scena Pro was appointed principal contractor for the Arts Theatre at Marble Arch, leading the build and ongoing operations of a 550-seat temporary theatre in central London. Working alongside HH Productions Ltd and Reed Watts Architects, we developed the design from RIBA Stage 2 through to delivery on site. Constructing a full working venue next to a Grade I listed national monument brought a distinct set of planning, access and acoustic constraints, each of which shaped the design and programme. The theatre opened with a 52-show run of the West End musical Heathers, adding a new permanent-quality venue to London's theatre landscape for the next two years.
The back of house structure was fabricated at our Croydon workshop and delivered to site for assembly, keeping work in the constrained Marble Arch location to a minimum. The external framework was engineered to carry the cladding across the building envelope while accommodating the tolerances of a temporary structure, and to be dismantled cleanly at the end of the two-year run.
